What is a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)?
The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character, alpha-numeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It connects to key reference information that enables clear and unique identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions. Each LEI contains information about an entity’s ownership structure and thus answers the questions of ‘who is who’ and ‘who owns whom’. Simply put, the publicly available LEI data pool can be regarded as a global directory, which greatly enhances transparency in the global marketplace. What are the legalities of the LEI?
At the end of 2017, the Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2017/105 came into effect, requiring the use of an LEI number for reporting all derivatives transactions since January 2018
All companies participating in the global financial market are now identified, networks made more transparent.
As an example, LEI numbers are already being used under the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) to identify counterparties to over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives. Additionally, an LEI number for issuers has been mandatory since the beginning of 2017.
